Three Great Journalists: David Jackson, Alden Loury, Scott Simon
2009 Studs Terkel Community Media Awards
Support CMW and celebrate great community-oriented journalists at our Studs Terkel Community Media Awards Wednesday, March 11. It’ll be an especially festive night for the Workshop as this year also marks our 20th anniversary of promoting news that matters. This year’s Terkel Award winners are…

Scott Simon, National Public Radio
Listeners often assume the host of National Public Radio’s “Weekend Edition with Scott Simon” is speaking from a studio in Chicago. It’s easy to see why they might think so: a recent Lexis search shows hundreds of stories on the show from or about Chicago, which Scott has called “our program’s Lake Woebegone—an improbable place populated by eccentric characters who sometimes seemed almost real.”

Alden Loury, The Chicago Reporter
For Alden Loury, the road to editor and publisher of The Chicago Reporter started when he was in seventh grade in front of the TV with the sound down and the game on so he could practice calling the plays.

David Jackson, Chicago Tribune
David Jackson got his first reporting internship at Chicago magazine in the 1980s when it was housed at WFMT. One of the first people he met was Studs Terkel, who David recalls “introduced himself by coming by where I worked and saying, ‘I want to meet some young people. Can you help me?’”

AgeOptions finds the media guide to be of great use
We at CMW love to see how our subscribers are using the "Getting on the Air, Online & into Print" media guide. Carol Mattar of AgeOptions finds the media guide to be of great use.

"The CMW Media Guide has been is an indispensable tool since I joined AgeOptions last June... The guide is ideal for nonprofits because it is far less expensive and easier to use than commercial services like Bacon’s and, for local or regional organizations like AgeOptions, because the Chicago-area listings are so complete." - Carol Mattar, Public Relations Specialist (AgeOptions)

AgeOptions, the Area Agency on Aging of suburban Cook County since 1974, is a not-for-profit organization that connects adults over age 60 and those who care for them with resources and service options so they can live their lives to the fullest and remain in their homes as long as possible. For more information or to connect with services, call AgeOptions at (708)383-0258 or visit www.ageoptions.org.

Ashok Easwaran
Editor, India Abroad
“If there is anything about relations between organizations in the United States and organizations in India,” says India Abroad editor Ashok Easwaran, “that would interest us.” Located in west Roger’s Park, the weekly paper focuses on national and international news.  While there is a particular focus on news affecting Indian communities, the paper also looks at events occurring in the rest of Asia – including Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal. “We ran a number of stories about how the Indian community voted for Barack Obama, and about how Indians in this country volunteered for his campaign,” says Ashok. Communicator Tips
"Always remember when you are doing a story that this is just one battle in the war of ideas. Don't pick a short-term fight with a reporter and lose the opportunity to build a long-term and valuable relationship. Remember, they have the pen, the camera, and recorder. Try and take the negative and build it into a positive opportunity to develop an understanding between you and the reporter for future stories."
-media strategist Laurie Glenn Gista
