Meet The Funders - Social Media, The News and Us
In this closing roundtable from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 11 of the conference, we will be bringing you a brain trust of experts in an open conversation about the promise and peril of the new media, its impact on nonprofits and the work that nonprofit communicators do. Beginning with facilitated small group discussions featuring you as conference participants, the roundtable will conclude with a dialogue including Terry Mazany, Chicago Community Trust; Clark Bell, McCormick Foundation; Charles Benton, Benton Foundation and John S. Bracken, MacArthur Foundation. They will share, from a funder’s perspective, their point of view on the opportunities and challenges nonprofits will face with the changing media landscape in the age of social media. Register for the conference Today!

Making Media Connections Goes Green!
The Community Media Workshop is working towards making the conference as earth friendly as possible.

This year we are doing the following to accomplish this:

  • Conference brochure printed on recycled paper
  • Caterer will be using plates and forks made of potato starch
  • We’re eliminating bottled water and opting for water coolers

Take Advantage of Making Media Connections Scholarships!
We are offering Conference scholarships to individuals from small organizations with budgets of $100,000 or less. Send your scholarship request via email to Maggie Walker, Community Media Workshop at maggie@newstips.org. Also keep in mind that if registering two people from your organization, the second person gets in for half-off.

So Long, “City Voices”
As yet another sign of the ever-changing media landscape, Chicago will no longer hear Smooth Jazz on Clear Chanel’s WNUA 95.5FM. The station recently switched to an all Spanish-speaking format. As a result, The Workshop’s public affairs radio program “City Voices” will no longer air. We are currently looking into broadcasting on the web and other public access stations. People to Pitch, Javier Salas, host and producer for Univision Radio, AM 1200
Javier Salas, radio host and producer of “El Nuevo Día” has hosted the longest-running morning news show on AM 1200 since the show’s inception in 2001. Salas says they cover hot button issues with a Latino focus. Topics range from immigration and education to religious topics and worker’s rights.

When pitching stories, Salas advises nonprofits to include as much information as possible, including explicit contact information with the times of day contacts can be reached. He says to be specific on when to call because oftentimes they produce on the go, and don’t have much time before going on the air.

“El Nuevo Día” is simultaneously broadcasted on channel 60, Telefutura from 6 to 7 a.m. Javier also hosts the TV show.

Meet Javier at the Making Media Connections conference on June 10 and 11. He will be a panelist on Thursday’s Global Chicago break-out session. You can also pitch your story to Javier Salas at javiersalas@univisionradio.com.
