Have you been following the changing media landscape? We have!

This past year saw countless changes in the media landscape, with fires, retires—and even some hires among the ranks of Chicago’s metro, ethnic, and community journalists.

Keep track with the new 2010 edition of Getting on Air, Online & Into Print, the directory of Chicago and Midwest journalists. Our 19th edition includes:

  • Thousands of reporters’ emails and direct-dials
  • Expanded online media section, following our release of “The NEW News” report, detailing the 80 biggest online news outlets in Chicago
  • The most complete listings of community and ethnic media in the Midwest
  • A 40-page Making Media Connections editorial handbook with tips that can help you communicate effectively
  • Order yours today! At http://www.newstips.org/cart

    Hank's Back!

Last year’s pub crawl was the opportunity to hear stories (and tell a few) at the city’s reporter hangouts extraordinaire: Billy Goat Tavern, Stephani’s at 437 N. Rush St. (the former Riccardo’s, whence Rick Kogan got his name), and Andy’s Jazz Club. How could we top that, we asked ourselves?

By bringing back Workshop co-founder Hank DeZutter, of course! Hank and Rick will help us crawl this historic path from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday October 8. Space is limited so make sure you register at www.newstips.org. The $25 registration fee includes a gift and snacks at the Billy Goat Tavern.

    Charlie Meyerson
    News Editor, WGN Radio
From ending the Kathy and Judy show to bringing in a range of new talent (check the line up at their Web site here: http://www.wgnradio.com/shows/schedule/), a lot’s been happening over at WGN Radio. We caught up with the new news editor, Charlie Meyerson, by email. Charlie’s been at Chicago Tribune for 11 years—most of them as conceptualizer and editor of DayWatch, the paper’s email headline service that over the past decade or so grew to an audience of about 60,000. Here’s a transcript of the short interview:

Workshop: Any changes in the news mix at WGN?
Charlie, WGN: I think the most significant change is this: A new awareness that in this era of iPods, iPhones, BlackBerrys and other increasingly smart and entertaining devices, radio faces many of the same challenges that have rocked the rest of the media world. Our news team will renew its focus on reports that go beyond generic headlines, to become “must-hear radio.” To that end, we’re requesting listener suggestions here: wgnradio.com/brainstorms. These submissions go to our whole news staff, and we’re hoping for many of them.
