Two-thirds of Nonprofits Lack Communications staff
Why don’t nonprofits get more news coverage? Well—and this will come as little surprise to many readers, two-thirds of us have no communications staff! Given that limitation, we actually do pretty well as a sector, at least here in our region: nearly half of us do get some news coverage, anyway.
So you can see the glass as half empty, or half full. Either way, it’s still just half a glass, i.e. we still have a long way to go to meet corporations and those with the means to staff or hire consultants for communications on an even footing.
Recently the Workshop surveyed 212 grantees of The Chicago Community Trust as part of four workshops for their grantees across the region. What we found reinforced what we’ve learned from two years of baseline studies from participants in workshops and conferences. We think it sheds light on nonprofit communications work. Learn more or download the full survey by visiting our blog, npcommunicator, at our new nonprofit communications portal.

WORKSHOPS
On-line Strategy:
9 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Nov. 8
“We often feel flummoxed by new media/technology’s complexities, but we are always able to master the techniques we really feel we need,” says trainer Gordon Mayer.
“Here’s an example: My mother called every June for help using Microsoft Excel to calculate her students’ course grades until she quit teaching. Recently she called to tell me, ‘I’m Skyping you!’ In other words long-distance calls free over the Internet, she figured out; grading students, she relied on me to help. From this comes one of Community Media Workshop’s new laws of new media/technology: our decision to learn these tools is proportional to the reward we expect to get from them.”
Learn more about why to use the Internet in On-line Strategy here.
Telling Your Story with Video:
9 a.m. to noon, Friday Nov. 16 “You don’t have to be a video producer to get a short piece about your agency,” says trainer Margaret Caples. “Hollywood may not necessarily be what we’re talking about, but video is one of the best ways and still one of the least-used ways to go about fundraising and awareness raising.”
Register now for the workshop here.
Story Power
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 “There is a method to storytelling, and with a little planning and practice, just about anyone can do it.”
“[I learned] to relentlessly focus the story telling process around people and obstacles - not mission or facts of the organization - and how to change the story to meet the values of the listener.”
“Facts alone are very dull to read. We need to infuse sensory imagery into our text - even mundane pieces to grab people's attention.”

People to Pitch
Gary Barlow, Chicago Free Press
When pitching a story, “the main thing is to be direct,” said Gary Barlow, editor of the Chicago Free Press. The weekly paper publishes news, arts, entertainment and culture for its audience – Chicago’s lesbian, gay and bisexual communities. Barlow prefers press releases over informal pitch calls or emails. When sending releases via email, he recommends placing the who, what, when and why at the top to grab his attention. Contact Gary at 773-868-0005 x21 or news@chicagofreepress.com.

DuPage Peace Protestors Charged
In the latest chapter of a bizarre prosecution which some see as an attack on dissent, the DuPage County State's Attorney yesterday dropped reckless conduct charges alleging that two local peace protestors threw unidentified objects from a bridge over I-355 -- and substituted a disorderly conduct charge alleging that they stood on the bridge and "made a throwing motion in the direction of vehicles" which caused a disturbance of the peace.

Ruling Buoys No-Match Critics
Judge Charles R. Breyer of the Northern District of California blocked a new Department of Homeland Security rule requiring employers who receive no-match letters -- indicating a discrepancy between an employee's name and social security number -- to fire workers who couldn't themselves correct errors in Social Security records.
