Workshops:

Be a professional!
Mike Burke attended our Professional Media Relations, PMR, course, became communications director at Ounce of Prevention Fund then moved to philanthropy—and now is our board chair. Mikki Leventhal took PMR and now is communications director of Columbia College Chicago. They’re just two of hundreds who learned or honed their skills in our longest-running and most popular workshop, which starts Jan. 22. Last year, we asked participants to list the highlights, and one said:

“I don't know if I have time to list them all here, as I'm too busy rethinking and restructuring how we reach out to the media! Our press releases have gotten more reaction, our published pieces have increased because I learned how to make a shorter, more engaging style of writing. I learned to ask the question, ‘Why should the media care as much as I do? Why should our organization get coverage over another organization?’

Learn what she learned. Join us in January for PMR. Cost of $395 includes a copy of our 2008 media guide for each organization and a copy of Spin Works nonprofit communications handbook. See all the evaluations from last year, get more information, or register now at www.newstips.org.

Check out some of the sample pages we have available online and order your copy here.

For those of you who have ordered the digital media guide CD version, expect them soon. CDs have shipped out!

People to Pitch

Geoff Dougherty
The Chi-Town Daily News, an on-line, independent news source at www.chitowndailynews.org wants articles. Editor Geoff Dougherty is looking for hyper-local coverage: stories that “focus exclusively on Chicago news, and more specifically, news pertaining to the city's neighborhoods. If you're involved in an issue and can't write about it objectively, we'd rather see a pitch than an article.” He accepts story pitches, completed articles and photography, but does not pay contributors. Daugherty also offers free citizen journalism classes the fourth Tuesday of each month. Learn more at their website or contact Geoff at geoff@chitowndailynews.org.
