Community Organizing in Chicago
September 26th, 2007On this episode of Community, Media & You, we’ll have a conversation about the state of organizing today and efforts on the South Side to empower underrepresented communities.Following the lead of Chicago’s most well-known grassroots community organizer, Saul Alinsky, other individuals have come together to bring democracy to the neighborhood level. Through organizing, traditionally underrepresented communities have influenced government policies and improved the quality of life in their neighborhoods. The Redline Oversight Committee, an outlet of the Developing Communities Project, is an example of such organizing. Working together, they have led an award-winning campaign to extend the Red Line to the Chicago City limits at 130th street. An extension would bring greater workforce and economic development as well as better educational opportunities to the Greater Roseland community.
