Funding Mass Transit

November 7th, 2007

With politicians still quarrelling in Springfield over how to fund mass transit, riders need to prepare for the CTA’s fall doomsday scenario. The spike in fares and elimination of trains and bus routes will leave many commuters with lighter wallets and the city streets jammed with even more air-polluting cars.Mass transit woes, higher gas prices, global warming – all that combined with increased momentum to use green technology and renewable sources of energy should leave Chicagoans considering more practical methods for getting around town.Aware of this problem, the Center for Neighborhood Technology works with local and national urban communities to develop more sustainable living practices. They work on projects in the areas of energy, materials conservation, housing preservation and of course, transportation. In order to benefit the communities they serve, projects incorporate materials and resources already found in the neighborhoods. On this episode of Community, Media & You, we’ll have a conversation about Chicago’s transportation crisis and what practical and sustainable steps can be taken to adapt to it.Hosted by Thom Clark of the Community Media Workshop @ Columbia College. Joining Thom on this episode is Jacky Grimshaw, Vice President of Transportation from the Center of Neighborhood Technology. But Jacky is more than just another transit expert. As Harold Washington’s chief of Intergovernmental Affairs, she helped create opportunities for city, county, regional, state and federal response to local needs. Perhaps our conversation will shed some real light on the region’s transportation challenges and the best way to fix them.
