In Their Own Words

May 16th, 2008

Day after day, news headlines and broadcasts report on the growing number of young people being gunned down in their communities. While there is a tremendous response from parents and community leaders, we seldom hear from the ones closest to the violence – Chicago’s youth.

For those of us removed from the situation, we do not know the real issues these teens face. And if you’re a teen living in these communities, you may wonder how to get your voice heard. For some thirty years, the Community TV Network has created a space for these at-risk teens to think critically and respond positively to their environment. Through media arts training, CTVN empowers youth and gives them the skills to produce their own videos and talk shows, including one of the longest running programs here on CAN TV. CTVN provides a platform for teens to communicate their stories - which are then broadcast locally, and nationwide.

On this episode of Community, Media & You, we’ll hear more about CTVN and some of the issues facing Chicago’s youth. Joining in on the discussion is CTVN director Denise Zaccardi and two CTVN participants, Sylvester Raggs and Cedric Hestor.
