Healing the Hood

June 19th, 2008

How should a community respond when rival gangs, gun violence or drug dealing control its streets? Young people energize a community, and with the warm weather finally here, more and more will be out of doors - and potentially in harm’s way. While street violence and kids killing kids sounds all too familiar to some of Chicago’s neighborhoods, the Little Village community is taking back its streets in a more creative way. With an arts fair, live music and basketball tournaments, local organizations and community members will promote peace and understanding at this month’s “Healing the Hood” festival. On this episode of Community, Media and You, we’ll hear more about Healing the Hood from organizers Fanny Diego, Mike Rodriguez of the Violence Prevention Collaborative, and Sammy Garcia, who sits on Healing the Hood’s steering committee.
