American Indian Center Pow-wow
November 25th, 2008
Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood is home to a variety of ethnic and religious groups. It’s a place where Asian, African and Hispanic cultures mingle among Caucasian neighbors.Uptown has also been the long-time residence to a largely overlooked population. More than fifty years ago, Native American tribes from around the Midwest relocated to Uptown and founded the American Indian Center. The Center has served as an educational and cultural resource for Chicago’s American Indian community. It is also a gathering place where they host potlucks, community celebrations and sponsor an annual pow-wow.This month, the center will host its 55th Pow-wow at the University of Chicago. The pow-wow will celebrate Native American culture through traditional food, arts and crafts, and dancing. On this episode of Community, Media and You, we’ll hear more about the American Indian Center and their pow-wow from Associate Director Celeste St. Germaine and special events coordinator Cyndee Fox-Starr.
